Research on Human or Animal subjects
Certification of compliance must be included in the manuscript for students conducting research on human or animal subjects. Please visit the following sites to ensure compliance:
Initial
Review
The
review of the entire manuscript by the Graduate Reviewer is a critical step in
the approval process. The Reviewer will examine the layout of each page to ensure
that it meets the standard set by the University of New Orleans. An initial review
must be made by the deadline stated.
The complete manuscript should be submitted
as no more than 2 MS Word or WordPerfect files to reviewer@uno.edu*
. The manuscript will be reviewed for format only. Students will receive format
comments within approximately 3 business days. All manuscripts must meet university
format requirements detailed in the Guidelines before they will be accepted.
*Students
who are unable to email or are using a different file format should contact reviewer@uno.edu.
Final
Versions
Once
they receive clearance from Reviewer, students may submit their final version.
Final version:
After Reviewer has approved the format, students may submit their manuscript as
a single PDF file to reviewer@uno.edu. Once the PDF file is approved it cannot
be modified.
Once Colleges have finalized their graduation lists, manuscripts for students approved for graduation will be added to the UNO ETD Collection and notification will be sent to the Library to begin the cataloging process.
Electronic Submission
All graduate
students finishing degree requirements at the University of New Orleans
must submit their manuscripts electronically.
Electronic
documentation is rapidly becoming the administrative standard for universities
and other institutions. In addition, libraries and other archiving facilities
are moving towards digitizing their collections as a means of preserving documents
at a minimal cost.
The
process of creating an electronic thesis or dissertation is a simple one. Once
a manuscript is finalized in word processing software, it is ready to be converted
to PDF (Portable Document Format). With access to Adobe Acrobat* now available
on student tech-fee funded labs across campus, this process is as easy as selecting
the print icon.
INSTRUCTIONS: On a computer with Adobe Acrobat installed, open the file to be converted. Select Print. Change the printer destination*** to Acrobat Distiller (version 5.0) or to Adobe PDF (version 6.0 & 7.0). Select OK. Conversion will now be complete.
*Adobe
Acrobat 7.0 Professional is installed on computers in the
student labs in the Library, Education, and Liberal Arts buildings. Adobe Acrobat 5. 0 is installed at the Jefferson Center.
**Can't get to campus? Download Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Professional for a 30-day free trial: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/tryout.html
***If you do not see Acrobat Distiller or Adobe PDF as one of your printer destinations, the full package of Acrobat is not installed on the computer. Don't confuse Adobe Reader with Adobe Acrobat!
Bound Copies
There is no on-campus service for binding manuscripts. Students seeking a bound copy need to contact a bindery independent of UNO.
Services in the New Orleans area include Walter W. Eckert Binder & Specialty Co. Inc. 941 Lafayette St. New Orleans, 504-525-3545 and National Index Bindery on L&A Road in Metairie, 504-828-7991.
There are also binders who process requests online such as Heckman Bindery in Indiana, www.thesisondemand.com and Houchen Bindery, http://www.houchenbindery.com/odp/.
Dissertations and ProQuest
All doctoral students pay a $45 dissertation microfilming fee at the time that they pay their Graduation Fees. This fee goes to ProQuest Information and Learning (PQIL) , a corporation that will microfilm and archive the dissertation as well as assign it a unique ISBN and create a bibliographic record for distribution to resources
such as OCLC, Silver Platter, STN and Dialog.
In addition to payment of the fee, PQIL requires students to complete an Author Agreement form. The form requires students' selection of either the Open Access or Traditional Publishing options. There is an additional $95 fee for the Open Access option. Forms with a copy of the dissertation title page and abstract attached should be turned in to the Graduate School office.
The Graduate School will forward the form and the electronic manuscript to PQIL for processing after the official graduation date. PQIL suggests that authors should allow up to 16 weeks between receipt of the form and release of the dissertation.
Please note: Although the Graduate School collects the fees and agreement forms for distribution, PQIL is an agency independent of the University of New Orleans. Any agreement between students and PQIL for services such as copyright registration, or discounted copies of your dissertation, in addition to the decision on options of access are also independent of UNO. Students are encouraged to make copies of the Author Agreement form for their records before turning them in to the Graduate School office.
Students who may decide to opt out of this service must complete a waiver form in the Graduate School office. The microfilming fee will not be refunded.
