Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering and Applied Science
The program is intended to develop the necessary research, analytical, and design skills to qualify graduates for high-level engineering and scientific positions in research, industry and government. This unique program provides the candidate with substantial depth in one branch of engineering or science as well as a broad base of interdisciplinary knowledge needed for the technological challenges of today. Engineers and scientists find that the Ph.D. degree can significantly increase their lifetime earnings.

Admission requirements:
Engineering concentrations -
- Receipt of an undergraduate or a Master's degree in engineering.
- Meet the UNO GPA requirement--2.5 undergraduate, 3.0 graduate.
- Have a GRE score (verbal and quantitative sections) of 1200 and a TOEFL score of 550 (paper) or 213 (computer).

Science concentrations -
- Receipt of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, engineering, geophysics, mathematics, physics, or a closely related field, or be willing to complete course work required in an existing Master’s program in one of the participating departments at UNO while pursuing the PhD.
- Applicants are expected to have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 for undergraduate work and 3.5 or above for graduate work.
- Foreign applicants must have a TOEFL score of 550 or better.
- Results of the GRE (no more than 5 years old). Minimum GRE scores are determined by the individual departments.
